BCATA 2008 Conference:
The Artful Eye

What better place to host the annual BC Art Teachers Association Conference than Salt Spring Island, a beautiful place to visit with a rich artistic environment. Everywhere you go there is something fascinating to look at whether it is nature, sculptors busy working on a carving outside their studios or colourful banners hung around town created by Salt Spring Elementary School students. We are proud of our artisans, culture and local history and want to share a little piece of it with all of you. This is why we invite you to join us at the conference, October 23, 24 & 25, 2008.
The conference begins on Thursday evening with an early registration and reception at ArtSpring Islands Art Center. Come and listen to Robert Bateman, our featured Keynote Speaker for the evening. In the galleries you will be treated to a show of local teacher's works as well as some of our community artists who will be presenting workshops at the conference. Also in the galleries there will be a combined show of the Salt Spring Island Painters and Weavers Guilds. While you are enjoying all of this you may partake in sampling some of our locally produced cheeses, breads, desserts and wines.
Friday and Saturday will be filled with lots of opportunity for enrichment. The workshops will be presented by teachers and community art specialists from Salt Spring Island, B.C. and beyond at Gulf Islands Secondary School. Whether you are interested in primary, intermediate or secondary levels there will be something of interest for all. With many hands on opportunities, workshops will range from printmaking to collage to media arts to painting techniques and a lot more in between. There will be five scheduled workshop sessions with a variety to choose from in each session.
Friday morning keynote speaker (to be announced), studio tours, special entertainment throughout the conference, a few surprises and of course good food are being planned to help make your Artful Eye 2008 Conference a truly memorable Salt Spring Island experience. We have timed the Saturday schedule in such a way that there will even be time for you to visit our local, famous Saturday Market before you leave.
