Art & Attention Painting Workshop
Guest contribution by Heidi Thompson

Art & Attention was just that – a free workshop aimed at developing one's attention and then applying that focus to painting. A great combination, considering art is ultimately an expression of one's state-of-mind.
A calm, observant mind, will affect one's power to see things clearly, sustain energy and stay focused. These positive qualities will directly influence and infuse one's artistic expression — whatever that expression may be.
The first part of the 4-hour workshop took place in the quiet gallery space surrounded by Heidi's large, luminous colour fields. The non-objective paintings create an environment suitable for concentration. Then 20 adults and one child were taught a simple exercise called Breath Awareness or Anapana which effectively calms distracting thoughts and restlessness.

While everyone, including seven-year old Liam, was observing the breath, they noticed the mind become less reactive and increasingly focused. A sharp, penetrating attention allows one to observe more accurately. Not only observe nature and things around one, but also see what's happening inside one's self. A useful tool for children, adults and artists alike.
In the second half of the workshop, Heidi shared numerous art techniques — both fundamental and advanced that she has acquired over 25 years of painting. Then everyone created beautiful landscapes using acrylics on canvas board. Heidi firmly believes that nature is our best teacher.
When the workshop ended, everyone cheerfully exchanged experiences and proudly displayed their paintings. One woman expressed her enthusiasm, "Thank you for giving me this opportunity to prove to myself that I can do it. I just need to focus and quiet the negative/critical chatter in my mind. My life is richer and more peaceful because of today."
