Student Art at Circle Craft
Art by students of Gleneagle & South Delta Secondary School

OPEN HOUSE: Student Art Exhibition will officially kick off the 34th Annual Circle Craft Christmas Market on Wednesday, November 7th and be on display through November 11th, 2007.
This show represents a cross-section of the many styles and mediaart students from across the Lower Mainland are practicing. A widerange of artistic techniques will be featured including mixed media, sculpture, photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, and illustration. Viewers will get to experience the reflections of these students and their inspirations.
"Our hope is that collaborations of this kind will inspire other students in the future," said Paul Yard, of the Circle Craft Co-operative.

This is a wonderful opportunity to see exciting art, full of youthful energy and the promise of careers yet to come. OPEN HOUSE: Student Art Exhibition is presented by Circle Craft Co-operative and generously sponsored by Opus Framing & Art Supplies. Circle Craft Co-operative gratefully acknowledges the hard work and dedication of all teachers and students involved, with special thanks to Mike McElgunn, Fine Arts Department Head at Gleneagle Secondary School.
This inaugural show is an exciting showcase celebrating student creativity and featuring 105 works of young people in Grades 9 - 12. Participating schools include Gleneagle Secondary (Coquitlam), Riverside Secondary (Port Coquitlam), Burnaby North Secondary (Burnaby), Matthew McNair Secondary (Richmond), Walnut Grove Secondary (Langley), Elgin Park Secondary (Surrey), South Delta Secondary (Delta).

"We are pleased to have an opportunity to share our students' work at the 2007 Circle Craft Christmas Market. Although our programs are experiencing uncertainty due to the loss of student fees without a stable financial alternative, it is inspiring and rewarding to see the dedication and enthusiasm many of our tudents bring to the art room every day. The works featured at the Christmas Market are evidence of their commitment and creativity. You will be impressed by the diversity and quality of drawing, painting, graphic design, photography and sculpture highlighting some of the dynamic art programs found in Lower Mainland school districts. We appreciate the support of both Circle Craft and Opus." - Mike McElgunn, Gleneagle Secondary School
Riverside Secondary School: Port Coquitlam's Riverside Secondary is represented by current grade 11 and 12 Art students, along with two students who graduated last year. The wide variety of work ranges in size and media, and includes digital and personally developed photography, drawings, mixed media pieces, paintings and a picture book. The artists, who have produced their pieces in Drawing and Painting and Photography classes, include: Lori Allen, Paulina Lai, Briana Long, Kateryna Marinets, Shannon McCubbin, Jordan Megahy, Lena Mok, Lisa Oldhauser, Alaina Tolhurst , Mahshad Sayari, Ada Sakovitz, Leigh Selden, Marika Sorila, Jamilla Toure and Kareen Wong.
Burnaby North Secondary School: At Burnaby North we have over 2300 students enrolled. This gives us the ability to offer a wide range of visual art courses from 2D to 3D. Some of the courses offered are: classical animation, classical photography, desktop publishing, media arts, ceramics and sculpture, graphics, drawing and painting, art foundations, and first year University credits called Advance Placement in the areas of art history, studio art 2D, studio art 3D and studio art drawing. There are seven art teachers and five of us teach a full load of art. What is lovely is that many students do take an art course! While most students in art courses do not go on to become professional artists, many do find the creative thinking and visual literacy skills developed in this course invaluable. After all, the work place is looking for creative problem solvers and for people who can imagine new ways of doing things. Students who do apply to art schools often are admitted on their first application as a result of their portfolios, which they developed at Burnaby North.
Walnut Grove Secondary Schoo: Art is a big part of life at Walnut Grove Secondary. We offer art courses for grades 8 through 12 in visual arts foundations as well as Ceramics courses, photography courses and drawing and painting courses. The pieces we entered in the show come from our senior ceramics students and senior drawing and painting students. Students chose their favorite pieces to present in the Circle Craft Show. Our 3D pieces are made ofmedium fire clay while the others are multimedia on canvas.
South Delta Secondary School: The visual art program at South Delta Secondary School has a well-established record of excellence in British Columbia. Each year, nearly half the Grade 8-12 student population enrolls in an elective art class at SDSS; choosing from courses in media arts, drawing and painting, clay and sculpture, graphic design, and general art studies. Students are encouraged to produce works, which are both technically challenging and contextually meaningful. Three full-time visual art teachers lead students through their respective processes: Mr. Peter Scurr, Mrs. Julie Lymburner, and Ms. Tara Dawson. Each year students pursue their work with great rigor and are encouraged to show completed pieces at one of several art shows held throughout the school year. We are most pleased, therefore, to share with you a few of our recent works here at the 2007 Circle Craft Exhibit. Enjoy!
Elgin Park Secondary School: Elgin Park Secondary School is located in the White Rock/South Surrey area of the lower mainland. The Visual Arts Department offers four programs. A general Visual Arts component for all grade levels; a small but popular Advanced Placement class for the more serious students and a large Photography Program specializing in traditional image making. Student may also take Art Co-op in one of their semesters; this allows them to do two, three week career and work placements in the community. ¬ÝIt is a busy and thriving department in the school.
Matthew McNair Secondary School: Matthew McNair Secondary School is happy to be participating in Circle Craft's 34th annual Christmas Fair. We are highlighting the work of 10 students in Grades 11 and 12 demonstrating their skill in using photography, lino cut printmaking and painting. The students whose work will be exhibited are Michael Prior, Brandon Lu, Brittney Wandler, Sonia Bancy, Taryn Lim, Raly Liu, Ryan Kong, Ryan Yu, Chika Yamade, and Christina Keats.
