Canadian Humanitarian Universal Day of the Child

Guest Contribution by Bita Ardabili

Day of the Child

November 20th is the Universal Day of the Child. Canadian Humanitarian honors this day by holding Art Auctions/Dinners in various cities across Canada to raise funds and awareness for disadvantaged children in developing countries.

In July, Canadian Humanitarian travels to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with donations of paint brushes, paper, paints, pastels, and other art supplies to work with the 250 children in the Kid's Hope Ethiopia projects and LiGA School to create art work to auction off at these events.

The children love exploring the different types of art supplies brought every year. Occasionally, professional artists accompany Canadian Humanitarian on these humanitarian expeditions and teach the children new techniques and styles. One of the staff members at LiGA School is a professional artist, but is unable to procure the supplies he needs for himself or his classroom in Ethiopia. He has stated that he would love to have enough supplies to have the children be able to display their work all around the school – currently the walls are bare because art supplies are a rare commodity.

Day of the Child

Event: Face to Face Fundraiser
When? Sunday, November 18th
Where? Calgary Winter Club, 4611 - 14 Street NW Calgary, Alberta, 6:30pm, Cocktails & Silent Auction, 7:30pm

This is the 1st Annual Face to Face Fundraiser.
A group of Calgary families who have an interest in the activities of Canadian Humanitarian and some of whom have been on previous expeditions got together and decided that they would like to host a fundraiser for Canadian Humanitarian and to help raise awareness about their projects in Ethiopia.

The date of this inspirational evening has been chosen thoughtfully to coincide with www.unac.org/en/news_events/un_days/children1.asp. In 1989, the UN General Assembly recommended that all countries choose a day to promote children's welfare; the Government of Canada designated November 20th as National Child Day, to commemorate the day on which both the Declaration on the Rights of the Child (1959) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) were adopted.

Canadian Humanitarian is thrilled to annouce that Melissa Fay Greene, author of There's No Me Without You - One Women's Odyssey to Rescue Africa's Children, will be the guest speaker at the Calgary Face to Face event. All proceeds from this event will be donated to HYPERLINK www.canadianhumanitarian.com in support of their projects in Ethiopia. Tickets are $75 per person with a tax receipt being issued for a portion of the amount. For more information about this fundraiser, please visit their website: www.facetofacefundraiser.ca
