10th Port Moody Festival of the Arts
April 13th - 22nd, 2007
Ten years ago two Port Moody visual artists — Pablo Schoenefuhs, who continues to reside in Port Moody and Bob Sheridan, now a resident of Langley — were the creative thinkers who launched the idea of the Port Moody Festival of the Arts. The festival is a means to showcase the Port Moody Art Association and to give meaning and value to Port Moody's old City Hall building — now home to the Port Moody Arts Centre Society.
Since then, the Festival has continued creating inside that vision. The mission of the Festival is to develop, nurture and grow the Festival audience to include all ages and cultural groups in the community, while introducing a diverse selection of visual, media and performing arts that appeal to a broad audience.
During the Festival, the Blackberry Gallery, at the Port Moody Arts Centre, will premiere 4 new shows and their popular Wine Label competition. Plus, The Port Moody Art Association's Spring Show and Sale opens Friday April 20th at 7:00pm and continues Saturday April 21st from 10:00am-4:00pm and Sunday April 22nd from 10:00am-5:00pm.
The highly anticipated ArtsConnect Studio Tour also happens on the same weekend. The opening reception is 6:30-8:30pm on Friday at the Old Mill Boathouse and the Studio Tours are from 11:00am-5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. Join the tour as it focuses on visual arts, artists and the creative process with 40 artists. Maps will be available at local merchants, the Arts Centre, City Hall and on the festival website.
The Port Moody City Hall Galleria will show the Coquitlam Weaver's display A Weaver and Her Comforts. There will be demonstrations and hands-on participation with knitting, weaving, spinning, lacework, cedar weaving, an Iron Artist Sculpture Challenge, clowning and more at Art 4 U Day.
The Gala opens with Romanza, followed by the stellar Port Moody Community Orchestra and "Old Turtle". Other highlights include the breathtaking Skookum Cirque and two enticing documentaries, one of which focuses on a previous Festival performer 13 year old guitar dynamo Danny Sveinson called "The Rock and Roll Kid".
Get tickets early for the sell-out "Girls Night Out" fundraising event, including martinis, chocolate and comedy with silent auction pampering packages for the girls to indulge in.
Port Moody Festival of the Arts, presented by the Port Moody Arts Centre Society, is another reason Port Moody calls itself 'City of the Arts'. For tickets and information call 604-931-2008 or visit www.pomoartsfestival.ca
