Don S. Williams Award, North Vancouver, Deadline June 12th at 3pm
This annual award recognizes one or more North Shore artists and is awarded from the Fund for the Arts on the North Shore (FANS). This year's amount available is $3,000. Eligible artists must be active in their particular discipline and intend to pursue a future in that discipline. Applicants must be a resident on the North Shore or have the majority of their creative work take place on the North Shore. The deadline for the award application is Tuesday June 12th at 3pm. Call for Submissions, Online
thedrawingroom.ca invites figurative artists and writers to submit work to their new online digest. Figurative artists of all levels are invited to submit 5-15 images (JPGs), an artist statement and/or CV. Saturday, June 9th, the Crafter Coordinators for the Saint Thomas Aquinas High School craft fair are holding a jury for their Christmas craft fair on Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th. Magnum Opus is a bi-monthly magazine showcasing the work of emerging visual artists across Canada. They are accepting submissions for their August/September themed issue Déjà vu. What does Déjà Vu mean to you? Send up to five images as low resolution jpeg's (72dpi) or pdf files to submissions@magnumopus.com with Déjà Vu in the subject line. Gallery Exhibit, Vancouver, May 26th - June 23rd
Ever thought that contemporary art exhibitions are overly theorized? Guest curator, Rachelle Sawatsky will be addressing this question with the exhibit Pop Philosophy at Access Artist Run Centre, 206 Carroll Street in Vancouver. Sawatsky has assembled this exhibition to broach the relationship between philosophy and contemporary art by presenting the work of four artists, Julie Beugin, Jessica Eaton, Jillian Pritchard and Dan Starling. Glasswork Exhibit, Vancouver, June 7th to July 1st
Tammy Hudgeon's work explores the influences of love, colour, culture and the divine upon fused glass creations in her exhibit Whimsical Spirit at the Crafts Association of BC, 1386 Cartright Street in Granville Island from Thursday, June 7th to Sunday, July 1st. There is an opening reception on Thursday, June 7th from 6pm-8pm. Tammy's work is highly influenced by her travels from the vibrant use of colour and ornamentation by traditional cultures from Guatemala to Vietnam and India finds aspects into her bowls, windows, jewelry and sculptural pieces and shrines. Fibre Art, Gabriola Island, June 14th to Sept 5th
Come to see The Fibre Dance Exhibit at The Centre Gallery at 590 North Road on Gabriola Island. The Fibre Dance Exhibit features contemporary quilts, art quilts, wall hangings, textile art, felting, weaving, batik, fibre art, and contemporary needlework made by the Gabriola Fibre Arts Group. The exhibit runs from Thursday, June 14th to Wednesday, September 5th. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 8:30am-4pm and Saturday from 9am-3pm. Art Exhibit, Vancouver, May 31st to July 8th
The Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery presents Creative Interpretation with drawings and paintings by Akiko Michael and Irena Shklover. The gallery is located at 950 West 41st Avenue in Vancouver. This exhibit inspires its viewers to imagine. Akiko Michael's simplicity and open-ended lines of her drawings invite the viewers to complete the drawing and create their own story. Irena Shklover's colourful paintings are playful and appeal to the inner child in all of us. The exhibit runs from May 31st until Sunday, July 8th. Printmaking Workshop, Quadra Island, June 16th, 17th and 18th
Join printmaker, Richard Calver at The Denman Island Arts Centre, 1016 Northwest Road, for a two-day workshop titled An Introduction to Linocut Printmaking. On Friday, June 16th from 7:30pm-9pm, Richard will be presenting a slide show of his work. The workshop continues on Saturday, June 17th and Sunday, June 18th from 9:30am-3:30pm. In this introductory workshop, students will learn linocut on a material called safety cut. The class will progress to multiple colour linocuts using reduction methods to multiple block method.
