Taking Part In Art

Guest Contribution by Karen Booth

Imagine an entire Elementary School (K-Gr.5) population "Taking Part in Art". That's exactly what's currently happening at Sidney School on Vancouver Island. Each of the 17 classes receives nine 45 minute sessions with myself, "Artist in Residence", Karen Booth.

We begin by engaging in a discussion about art and colour. Everything from "What is Art?", "Art in Everday Life", to simplified Colour Theory. The children are challenged with new ways of seeing and expressing ideas and emotions with colour, texture, pattern, symbols, shapes and composition. I am also teaching the children to respect and care for their tools and supplies.

Opus Framing & Art Supplies and Tri-Art have generously supported this program by providing each child with a cradled panel and paints. In addition to the painted panels, each class collaborates on a painted canvas banner reflecting a specific theme. So far we have artistically expressed Leadership, Compassion, Hope, Emotions, Preservation and Individuality. Many of the cradled panels are absolutely breathtaking and the banners produced so far have received rave reviews.

The children are so eager to learn and participate. Several students have been inspired to bring their own art and poetry from home to share with me. This has touched me in a big way. My main goal is to have all the children express themselves and their assigned themes through non-traditional approaches. So far, the program has already been a great success.

We hope to organize a show at the program's completion to display all the banners and individual paintings. Stop by Opus Victoria in January to see some of their work. If you'd like further information on the program or can offer an exhibition venue, please contact Karen Booth at 250-655-7065.
