Outsider Art In A Box Vending Machines
Guest Contributor — Rhonda Simmons
The next time you're feeling peckish for a piece of art, why not zip down to your local vending machine and satisfy that craving? Outsider Art In A Box is a public space art project using repurposed vending machines to sell art in public spaces in the city of Vancouver BC. Outsider Art In A Box is direct and accessible and most importantly a minimal cost way of making art accessible to the general public.
Outsider Art In A Box provides Canadian and International artists with an alternative space to the existing art spaces in Vancouver, BC. The project provides artists the opportunity to showcase minimalist works of art in a box as diverse as: small art pieces, sculpture, jewelry, found objects, patches, zines, comics, audio/video tapes, prints, paintings, collage, sculptures, gadgets, poetry/prose, toys, art books, puppets, text, textiles, knitting/crochet, and CDs/DVDs.
Rhonda Simmons is the creative midwife and curator of Outsider Art In A Box. The works are an ongoing endeavour. Art vending has held Rhonda's interest since being made aware of it through other artists that utilized the same theme in Canada and the United States. The project is family friendly, and is available to all as a creative challenge.
Outsider Art In A Box is a self-sustaining project, which is funded personally by the artist herself. It is the first of many projects to come. If you enjoy the art, feel free to donate to the ongoing success. The vending machines are also available for any project you might personally have in mind, your club, home, office, business, family celebration — all art is found art.
In a nutshell this is how it works: artwork in any media is welcome, as long as it fits in our boxes that measures 4.25" x 3" x 1". Artwork is randomly dispensed when you put in four dollars, The distribution of the $4 is two dollars to the artist, $1 to the host venue and $1 to Outsider Art In A Box for vending machine upkeep and ongoing project expenses. To submit to Outsider Art In A Box Vending Machines there is a one-time submission fee.
Outsider Art In A Box Vending Machines are located at Ruby Dog's Art House, 4738 Main St (between 30th and 32nd, on the East side) in Vancouver.
