Victoria Symposium

28 Artists of Conscience Galleries Open Downtown

On October 1st, The Victoria International Arts Symposium presented the Artists of Conscience Galleries, a virtual treasure hunt of art in unusual settings throughout downtown Victoria. With over 25 venues and 100 artists and performers throughout the month of October, the City of Victoria came alive with art.

All displays and performances addressed many of the most pressing social issues of today. Participants included both local artists and featured speakers at the Symposium. The galleries provided the public with a view of this region's leading socially engaged artwork and discussions at the Victoria International Arts Symposium that was held from October 27 to 30th.

The "Artists of Conscience Galleries" is an expansion on the "Phantom Galleries" project initiated by the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria. The goal of the galleries is to create beautiful displays of art in empty storefronts in order to build bridges between Victoria's downtown business community, our local citizens, artists, politicians, educators and tourists. Beautification of the windows will improve the economic atmosphere in Victoria and give greater visibility and recognition to our local artists.
