Knew Urk
The solo exhibition by internationally recognized American artist Jimmie Durham runs from Saturday May 27th to Saturday July 1st, 2006. Knew Urk combines elements of painting, assemblage, sculpture, and works in stone. Throughout his forty-year career, Durham has advocated that, "...the purpose of art is to help people interpret their world so that they may be better able to change it in positive ways." Rather than relying on the mythology of the artist as "creator", Durham appreciates the role of the artist as one who rearranges objects that exist in society, implying a direct relationship between social and artistic processes. This exhibition challenges what the artist describes as the "heavy, laden metaphors" attached to stone and its European history. Stone has played a significant role in Durham's artistic practice over the past decade. In his practice stone is metaphoric; it stands for all things structured: architecture, monumentality, and belief. Jimmie Durham is a Washington-born and Berlin-based artist, writer, and activist. His distinct and critical voice is spiked by puns, poetry, and political invective. Durham, of Cherokee heritage, was active in the American Indian Movement throughout the 1970s and in the early 1980s. Knew Urk is Jimmie Durham's first solo exhibition in Canada and his first solo exhibition in North America in over a decade. The exhibition is on display at Western Front Exhibitions, 303 East 8th Avenue in Vancouver, BC. For further information visit www.front.bc.ca, email exhibitions@front.bc.ca or phone 604-876-9343

Faces of Kenya
The Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery presents Faces of Kenya Drawings and paintings by George Vamos at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver 950 West 41st Avenue in Vancouver, BC. The Opening Night Reception will be held on Thursday June 15th, 2006 from 7:00pm-9:00pm. The exhibit runs until Sunday July 9th, 2006. George Vamos was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1910. Forced to leave, due to economic depression and the persecution of Jews, he moved to Iraq prior to World War II and was then interned by the British in Uganda. George fell in love with Africa, where he remained until he moved to Vancouver in the last year of his life. George's dream was to be a visual artist, but his parents persuaded him to pursue a more secure career. He studied architecture in Vienna, later becoming a highly respected architect in Kenya, where he designed private homes, town halls, office towers, a cathedral, and President Kenyatta's mausoleum. The portraits in the Faces of Kenya exhibit, created during the 1940s and 1950s provide a vivid impression of the richness found in Kenyas multi-cultural society, where George lived. The outstanding aspect of these portraits, are the unique and varied expressions he captured in the faces of his subjects. Georges drawings and watercolour paintings depict a journey lasting over 60 years through Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He used a rich variety of styles in various media including watercolour, pencil, charcoal, ink, wax crayon and pastels. Paper Dolls
Paper Dolls is a new series of pubescent figuration by Angela Grossmann. The exhibit will take place at the Diane Farris Gallery at 1590 W. 7th Ave in Vancouver, BC from June 1st to 24th, 2006. There is an opening reception on Thursday June 1st from 6:00pm-8:00pm. From an intense collision of ideas and materials, Grossmann constructs the emotional world of young teen girls. Her "fictional" people have an extraordinary sense of wholeness, despite being collaged from dozens of photo fragments enhanced with paint. They speak to the ever-shifting world of social status, fashion and identity among the "paper dolls" of 2006. After earning an MFA at Concordia University and teaching at Ottawa University, Grossmann returned to Vancouver in 1996 to paint and teach at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.
