August 29 – September 17, 2006
Be sure to visit the vibrant exhibition of contemporary painting opening August 29th at Federation Gallery on Granville Island. Painting on the Edge 2006 brings together over 40 different artists from across Canada and the U.S. The works have been selected from over 800 entries and make up a fresh and eclectic blend of traditional and contemporary painting styles. Everyone is welcome to attend the opening reception and awards presentation on Thursday, August 31st at 6:00 pm.
Unlike other medium-specific prize exhibitions, one unique aspect of Painting on the Edge is that the exhibition is designed to include all original painting, drawing and printmaking mediums, providing the audience with a wide spectrum of art work to view and enjoy. By including paintings by many different artists, this exhibition provides the participants and viewers with the opportunity to see new art created by artists working outside our local area.
Each year a different juror selects the show. By working with jurors who are practicing artists such as Christopher Schink, Carla O’Connor, Pascal Milleli and Kavin Buck, the FCA tries to ensure that each year’s show is distinct and unpredictable while maintaining a high standard for the individual works.
In addition to the $2,500 FCA Grand Prize, the FCA is very pleased to have the generous and continued sponsorship of Opus Framing and Art Supplies. Opus has created three unique prizes specifically for this exhibition which have been awarded each year since the shows inception in 2002. Each year three participants receive one of the $1,000 shopping sprees dedicated to paint and painting mediums, framing or painting supports. Opus has helped the FCA realize its goal of supporting artists by awarding numerous and substantial prizes, by advertising and publicizing the events and by encouraging people to visit the show.
The FCA offers services to artists such as providing a professional gallery space, generating sales and putting artists and customers in contact with each other. As such, the FCA inhabits an area between commercial galleries and small artists’ collectives. This exhibition serves the mandate to encourage excellence and professional development among both emerging and established artists.
