Baby Talk
David Miall is a University of Alberta English professor and Ellen Dissanayke is his co-researcher. Together they have recently published findings in a journal entitled, "Human Nature - an Interdisciplinary Biosocial Perspective," that suggest the cooing of parents to babies increases the child's propensity to the arts. The rhythm and speech sounds that parents provide to their babies, mimics that of poetry. Their study of the phonemes and rhythms of the cooing were in sharp contrast to normal adult-to-adult speech, and that they almost formed a pattern of verses. Besides studying the parental sounds, the researchers also studied the response of the babies. Besides furthering the parent-baby bond, the cooing may create a child with an aptitude for things artistic.
