Not quite possessed of the elegance of the dance steps in the sidewalks of Seattle, Vancouver City Council has recently voted to spend $20,000 from its Public Art Fund to beautify the city's "sewer access covers" (the covers formerly known as manholes). In 2000, Council voted to include public art within the civic infrastructure. Designs for the covers have not been determined and may involve a public competition. The city replaces or installs an estimated 350 to 400 covers annually and they last up to 100 years. The decorative covers will be installed in popular public areas.
