The commotion over the sponsorship scandal has eclipsed some compelling information within the recently released Auditor General's report. Chapter 6, dealing with "Protection of Cultural Heritage in the Federal Government," deals with cultural heritage inventory that is at greatest risk. Some excerpts: "Built, archival, and published heritage under the auspices of the federal government is exposed to serious risks of losses. This is because of deficiencies in various protection regimes, weaknesses in management procedures, and the combined effect of a decrease in protection expenditures and continued growth in heritage.

"... cultural heritage has suffered from the budget cuts of the last decade. Statistics Canada data shows that the 2000-01 expenditures of $508 million on cultural heritage were slightly below those of 1990-91, following a significant drop in the middle of the last decade. These expenditures, when expressed in 1990-91 constant dollars, show a decline of 17 percent."

The report says that lack of immediate action will result in the deterioration of many artifacts or, in some cases, their total loss. The full Auditor' Report is available at www.oag-bvg.gc.ca/domino/reports.nsf/html/03menu_e.html
