Stretch, Staple & Tack

Many artists rely on pre-stretched canvases for their paintings, while other artists prefer to stretch their own. That being said, there is something innately rewarding about creating your painting from the stretcher bars up.

In addition to our many pre-assembled canvases, we stock all the supplies you need to build your own canvases. As a resource for artists, we also have a simple two-page handout on how to stretch canvas, available at any of our stores or online under our 'How-to' icon.

Stretcher Bars

To stretch your own canvas you need to build a frame. At Opus, we currently stock two kinds of stretcher bars. The size you choose depends on function and aesthetics. The 1-3/8" thick bars are best for larger canvases for stability and to resist warping. You can also use gussets and cross bars to strengthen your frame. With smaller works, you can use either width of stretcher bars, depending on your preference or aesthetic. All of our stretcher bars are made of Hemlock and have pre-cut corner slats for easy joining.

Opus Stretcher Bars 5/8" wide: $0.50 - $2.50

Opus Heavy Duty Stretcher Bars 1-3/8" wide: $4.60 - $18.10

Canvas Pliers

Canvas pliers can go a long way to save your hands from cramping when stretching your canvas. We currently stock two styles of canvas pliers, both from Holbein.

Canvas Pliers No. 5 have extra wide jaws and are designed for use with larger works. They are made with a light molybdenum and rubberized grips. Molybdenum is a metallic element which forms to an extremely hard, strong and durable alloy. The jaws on these pliers measure a huge 4-1/2" across.

Canvas Pliers No. 2 are similar to the No. 5, however they are narrower and are better used for stretching smaller works of canvas. These pliers are made with nickelled die-casted alloy and the jaws measure 2-3/8" across.

Canvas Pliers No. 5 $135.96

Canvas Pliers No. 2 $45.56

Staple Guns

Most people today use staple guns to attach their canvas to the backside of the wooden stretcher bar frame. A staple gun is a definite asset and worth the extra dollars. We stock both Heavy Duty and Light Duty staple guns. The Heavy Duty Staple Gun can also be used to drive brad nails and pin nails in addition to staples. It is chrome plated.

Our Light Duty Staple Gun is also useful for stapling canvases. It is an economical choice for use in the studio or at home.

Heavy Duty Staple Gun $32.50

Light Duty Staple Gun $13.30

Canvas Tacks

You can use canvas tacks to attach canvas to wood stretcher bars instead of staples. These are copper plated hardened steel and will age, but not rust like steel staples. Tacks take a bit of time to get used to, and require fairly good hammering skills as they are quite small. Canvas tacks are a more traditional way of attaching your canvas, and many artists prefer this look. Canvas tacks are available in 2 oz packages.

Canvas Tacks $4.80
