If you are an artist with access to email, the Dear Emily Listserv is a service you might want to use. It is a peer-to-peer resource for visual artists and designers created by the Emily Carr Alumni Society. The more people who join the free service, the better the Listserv becomes. The service is proving valuable for artists selling equipment, searching for studio or exhibition space, and for artists wanting technical information about techniques and supplies that they use.

A Listserv allows you to send a single email to an unlimited number of people. Every member of the Listserv receives your question or comment, and every response to your email from any member of the Listserv also goes to every member. So, not only can you get answers to questions you have about artmaking, you also see questions and answers that interest you but which you might never have otherwise discovered.

The Listserv is free. To become a member please send an email entitled "Subscribe" to majordomo@eciad.ca and type the following into the body of the e-mail: "subscribe dear_emily (your e-mail address here without brackets)." For example, to register, the text in the body of your email might say: subscribe dear_Emily johnsmith@servername.com. That's all there is to it. If you register successfully, an e-mail will be sent to you explaining more about the free service. Once registered, you address your questions or comments to dear_emily@eciad.ca

Sales publications are now focusing on the demand for unique and inexpensive items during the 2003 Christmas sales period. Crafts Sales and Markets are, for the first time in national sales publications, showing up in analyses of Christmas retail sales. Buyers with less disposable income cite the uniqueness of items as an essential compensation for the lower prices being paid for gifts. This is good news for artists and crafts persons, who are working towards building their inventory for this holiday season.

The 2003 Garbage Can Art Contest & Auction, benefits the Art Therapy program at B.C.'s Children's Hospital. Each year, on the third Sunday of September, twenty-five artists take part in the annual auction in the main outdoor courtyard at Granville Island Public Market. This year's contest and auction take place Sunday, September 22nd.

Participating artists have four hours, from 11 am to 3 pm, to complete their works by painting, glueing, snipping and otherwise adorning their metal garbage cans. From 3:00 to 3:30 pm a panel of three judges will review the results and award cash prizes of $250, $150 and $100 for first, second and third place cans. The completed garbage can artworks are then auctioned to the public by broadcast personality Dave Abbott.

There is no registration fee and registration is limited to 25 artists. Artists should bring their own art supplies. To register, simply email your full name, your daytime and evening phone numbers and your mailing address to kdm@festcom.com. You will receive confirmation of your registration by return email. Otherwise, call Kevin McKeown 604-681-5411 and ask to be mailed a registration form.

The Canadian Tourism Commission recently undertook to learn more about the nature and number of people who travel and take advantage of visual arts tourist amenities. They were in search of a profile of "Visual Arts Enthusiasts" (VAEs). A VAE was defined as a traveller visiting two of the following during their travels: art galleries, international film festivals, and/or local arts and crafts studios.

The Alliance for Arts and Culture recently reported on some of the findings from the Canadian Tourism Commission research:

  1. VAE's represent the third largest group of travellers to Canada from the United States and the fifth largest amongst domestic travellers.
  2. In Canada, 66 percent of performing arts patrons are also VAE's; (the overlap in the US was 77 percent).
  3. VAE's who travel to Canada from the US are more likely to live in mid-tier states than the American adult population as a whole. VAE's are more likely to come from southern states than from other areas.
  4. While American VAE's are fairly distributed by gender and age, 63 percent of Canadian VAE's are female.
  5. A somewhat higher proportion of Canadian VAE's were born outside of Canada (19 percent) compared to the general domestic traveling population.
  6. The majority of both Canadian and American VAE's (74 percent in Canada, 75 percent in the US) come from adult-only households.

According to the commissioners of the survey, it suggests that the visual arts markets in both countries should expect to grow at rates faster than average in the future, thanks to aging populations in both Canada and the US. Another factor they considered in making their predictions for the future is the increasing immigration to Canada. Since older travellers and new Canadians tend to participate in more culturally-oriented activities, all of the cultural activity-based segments featured in these analyses can expect strong levels of growth, say experts.

There is an opportunity for artists working in ways that engage with communities around issues of joint concern, who are interested in creating video documents about their practice.

The Document Engagement Institute will bring together eight Canadian artists working in the field of community-engaged arts for three weeks at the end of January 2004. The artists will be from a variety of disciplines. The goals of the Institute are to increase the capacity for digital video documentation amongst the attending artists, to produce a suite of short documentaries and to increase understanding and support of this field through screenings and distribution of the resulting videos.

Documenting Engagement is a project of the Pacific Cinematheque, developed and presented with the assistance of The Roundhouse Community Centre Association, and the donation of professional support from Two (2) Cats Working Inc. For details: www.documentingengagement.ca. Deadline is September 20, 2003.
