Opus Langley Visual Arts News

A Brief History
Our Opus Langley store was opened in 1997 in the heart of downtown Langley, BC. It was a much needed outlet for artists and framers living south of the Fraser River, and very soon became a destination spot. To accommodate the growing number of artists in this region, we added many new products and services over the years, filling almost every square inch of our Fraser Highway location. We were just about fit to burst this past year when we found a new and bigger location just a couple of blocks away at 5501 204 Street in the Langley Mall next to Army & Navy.

We are excited about this new location where we will be able to better serve all of our regular customers and the arts community with a wider range of products, more floor space, increased parking facilities, and increased room for our framing services. We will also be adding a few more fine art papers, more pre-cut canvas footage for artists in a hurry, and some new bigger sizes of Opus Exhibition Canvases. Did we also mention that we will have increased room for our framing services?! Visit us at our new location on 204 Street and have a browse through our new store. We know you will love our new location and we are now open Sundays 11am to 5pm!

Come see us on November 15th when we will host our first ever Customer Appreciation Day! There will be in-store demonstrations and free prizes to be won and our ever-faithful bubble machine for the kids and adults alike. We will also have a special guest, artist Mike Svob, SFCA, who will be on hand to demonstrate his techniques in oil and acrylic, sign his book and answer your questions.

A Lively Arts Community
Our Opus Langley store has the distinct pleasure of being part of an active arts community which includes a local arts council and large number of established art groups and schools who run visual arts programs.

The Langley Arts Council incorporates cultural members and groups from Langley and its surrounding communities. It is a non-profit society whose goal is to stimulate, initiate, coordinate and promote any cultural activity in the visual, performing, musical and literary arts.

The Arts Council produces a great resource directory for artists and art groups. All proceeds from the sales of this directory benefit the Langley Arts Council Scholarship Fund - a great program that supports deserving, creative students in the communities of Langley. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, member or would like to purchase a directory for $5.00, visit the Langley Arts Council at Michaud Heritage House 5202 204th Street, call 604-534-0781 or email artscouncillangley@telus.net. Directories are also available for purchase at Opus Langley.

In addition to this directory and our own Visual Arts Newsletter, The Artist's Journal is another great local resource, published by artist and writer Eve Lees, of Surrey, BC. The Artist's Journal is exclusively for British Columbia artists who paint or draw and who are looking for information on artist competitions and exhibitions.

It Never Happens Here
On the weekend of August 30-31st 2003, a new event took place on the Taylor Farm, on Gray Avenue in Abbotsford, BC. The first ever Never Happens Here Arts & Music Festival took place in the surroundings of the beautiful Glen Valley and featured local music, entertainment and art.

Opus Langley staff member Chakara Ledoux, who volunteered much of her time and energies outside of work to coordinate the visual arts component of the festival, brought this event to our attention. Chakara was one of a group of artists and musicians whose passion for the arts led them to organize this unique event, which highlighted BC artists and in particular, artists of the Lower Mainland.

The art vendor area of the festival gave local artisans an opportunity for greater exposure and to sell their wares. There was also a feature artist display area established, which included the works of several local artists including Suzanne Northcott, Dick Bond, Joshua DeGroot, Ryan and Jessica Titley, Collin Mitchelle, Annamaria Kardos and Chakara Ledoux.

The Festival site also featured food, dance, children's activities, short films, camping, comedy and an abundance of fun. With the first festival under their belt, next year's festival will prove to be even better. The festival organizers hope to start off the 2nd Annual Never Happens Here Arts & Music Festival with a contest for the event poster. For more information visit www.neverhappenshere.ca, email chakara@neverhappenshere.ca or call 604-534-2726.

LAUGH Life Drawing Group:
Lots of Artists Using Gesture Humorously

Does foreshortening drive you crazy? Do your drawing supplies look at you longingly from your over-stuffed boxes of supplies? LAUGH is a non-critical life drawing group, which meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month for a two-hour session at the Douglas Recreation Centre at 20550 Douglas Crescent in Langley (dates subject to change). This very inclusive and very loosely organized group spans the entire spectrum of art expertise. You may even see a number of familiar Opus staffers waving their charcoal and graphite about. There is a nominal $5 drop-in fee and no supplies or teaching is provided. The space is provided courtesy of Opus Framing & Art Supplies. For details, contact Kelaine Devine 604-533-0601 at Opus in Langley.
