Vancouver's Alliance for Arts and Culture's latest newsletter reported on a paper released by the Canadian Policy Research Network. Job Quality in Non-Profit Organizations, by Kathryn McMullen and Grant Schellenberg, is the second paper in a series on the non-profit sector in Canada. It is of interest to Canadians because we depend heavily on non-profit organizations for the delivery of essential goods and services, particularly during these times of severe government cutbacks.

The report states :

  • More than 60,000 non-profit organizations provide almost 900,000 jobs, equal to the number of people employed in construction, mining and oil and gas industries across Canada.

  • Only 25 percent of non-profit employees are under age 35, compared to 37 percent in the for-profit world.

  • Women make up 75 percent of the non-profit workforce, compared to less than 50 percent at for-profits.

  • Post-secondary grads occupy 58 percent of non-profit jobs, 44 percent of for-profit positions.

  • Median earnings of non-profit managerial, professional and technical/trades employees are $2 to $4 per hour lower than in the for-profit sector.

  • Almost 40 percent of non-profit employees are dissatisfied with pay and benefits, compared to 20 percent in for-profits. According to the Alliance, the authors acknowledge the intrinsic benefits of work in the non-profit sector, benefits that come from commitment to a cause, or doing socially valued work. To download a free copy of the report, visit: www.cprn.org under "What's New."
