Canadian Fine Art Calendar

This 2004 calendar is an exciting joint project of Artists for Kids Trust and the Rotary Club of Lions Gate. For many years now Artists for Kids Trust in North Vancouver has fulfilled its mission to build an art education legacy for the children of British Columbia by selling original prints created by its artist patrons. The Trust provides a range of opportunities in the visual arts to children and youth. These include after school art classes, art education for special needs children, 5 day summer art programs, scholarships, work experience and Master Classes with Artists in Residence.

The Rotary Club of Lions Gate is active in fundraising for a wide range of projects affecting both local youth and people in other parts of the world. For several years priority has been given to "Investing in Youth" projects on the North Shore, including vocational scholarships, North Shore Youth Week, Adventures in Citizenship for Youth, Rotary Youth Leadership Seminars, assistance to individual youth in need and the North Shore Youth Safe House.

In this joint fundraising effort, proceeds from calendar sales will be invested in the children and youth of the North Shore. The calendar features prints from the Artists for Kids Trust collections - prints that are not available for sale anywhere but through the Trust. The artists include Jack Shadbolt, Roz Marshall, Bill Reid, Takao Tanabe, Joe Fafard and more. It is a unique offering, perfect for giving to anyone with an interest in art.

With the generous help of community minded businesses, 2,000 calendars have been produced for the Christmas season. Calendars cost $15.00 each or $10.00 each for ten or more. To purchase a calendar please contact Shirley Robertson at 604-987-1466 or email smrobertson@shaw.ca. With every calendar purchased, the benefits are multiplied through investment in youth and youth art education

The Canadian Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) has issued new guidelines to clarify the types of political (including advocacy) activity that charities in Canada can be involved in. The former regulations put arts service organizations such as CARFAC or the Canadian Conference of the Arts at risk of losing their federal charitable status and, therefore, their ability to issue tax-deductible receipts.

The revised guidelines, which became effective Sept. 2, are based on the Income Tax Act, which charities must adhere to in order to be registered and qualify for tax benefits. The guidelines outline the types of political activities prohibited by charities, how much charities can spend on permitted political activities and how CCRA distinguishes between a charitable and political activity.

The guidelines adjust the amount of money charities can spend on advocacy. Previously, all charities could spend no more than 10 percent of their revenue.

The new rules vary the percentage depending on a charity's income:

  • charities with less than $50,000 in annual income can spend
    20 percent on advocacy,
  • charities with $50,000 to $100,000 in annual income can spend
    up to 15 percent,
  • charities with $100,000 to $200,000 in annual income can spend
    up to 12 percent,
  • and charities with annual income of more than $200,000 can spend
    up to 10 percent.

CCRA will also now allow charities to exceed the maximum percentage for a particular year under certain circumstances. The guidelines also clearly specify what are prohibited political activities and they outline the type of public awareness efforts that are considered charitable activity and not political activity. The Drawing Network is 15 years old and "still going strong". Drawing-as-language is its goal. Knowing that parents, teachers and educators consider language a high priority, the Network believes that drawing for children is a language in its own right, which is critically important for mental development.

If you are interested in the Drawing Network and its mandate, you can help by talking or writing to parents, teachers, principals, district superintendents, and local government officials and all who care for and about children. Take contact information below to your local preschool or nursery school to share with other parents. There are no membership dues but small donations to the Network are always welcome. If you care to donate, cheques should be made to the University of British Columbia. Bob Steele, The Drawing Network, 3853 West 15th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C.
