How-To: Introduction to Screen Printing
With preparation and quality materials, screen printing can be easy as pie! Marsha Arbour, Manager of Opus Art Supplies in Victoria, reveals the step-by-step techniques for creating a simple 3-colour screen print with stencils.
In Part 1 – Materials & Preparation (above), you’ll be introduced to the supplies needed for printing, how to prepare your materials, and learn how to create both paper and Mask-Ease stencils.
Part 2 – Registration & Printing (below) covers attaching your stencils to the screen, two methods of registration, and the creation of a 3-colour print series.

Registration/ Aligning two colors
was confusing/ Two separate screens
are being used? One for each color?
Cutout stencils are attached to screen above ?
Acetate print is used under the screen but on Top
of pre-printed image below the screen, on the tables?
Then removed? Is the acetate print visible
through the screen ? Is this the way you align?

In the video two screens were used – one for the two paper stencils and second for the Mask-Ease stencil. However, you can just use one screen for all the colours as long as it is cleaned and dried between colours. Before the first pass of ink, Marsha used tape in two corners to keep the paper stencils in place. After that they were held in place by the ink.
To use the Acetate for registration, tape one side down to the board to act like a hinge, then print the current stencil image onto the acetate. When you put your paper down and put the acetate print over top, it will show you where the current print will end up. Because the acetate is fixed to the board with tape, it will lay in the same place every time. Visually line up your print on paper under the acetate print, then keep the paper where it is (I believe Marsha used Easy Tack Spray on the board to keep the paper in place while printing) and hinge the acetate out of the way, then lower the screen and print onto the paper. Et voila. I hope that helps.
