Opus Visiting Artist and Staff Demos

Refine your skills, learn something new, or get inspired by other artists sharing their ideas and methods. Visiting Artist and Staff Demos are informative, free and happening at an Opus near you. Some workshops may require material fees.

  • Key Techniques Class 2: Grass, Trees & Leaves with Bill Higginson

    In this 3 part workshop, Bill Higginson will demonstrate various techniques as you explore acrylics, graphite, and pastels. Discover the relationship of technique between each medium to help gain a greater understanding of how to paint everyday objects and scenery.

    1. How to use a pencil to produce similar effects as the bristles of a paintbrush.
    2. The random nature of the brush and how to create the effect in pastel.

  • Unconventional Abstract Drawing with Rojia Dadashazdeh

    Working with negative and positive space, Rojia Dadashzadeh will demonstrate and play with multi-media using acetates, various papers, fabrics, watercolour pencils, and much more to create multi-media drawings on paper.

    Rojia is a Vancouver–based artist and the art teacher at Brockton. She holds an honours degree in Fine Arts from the University of Waterloo, a post-graduate degree in Web and Graphic Design from Sheridan, Le Grand Diploma in cuisine and pastry from Le Cordon Bleu Paris and a Bachelor of Education from UBC.

  • Workshop: Pourable Acrylic Mediums

  • Mat Cutting Essentials with Jo Ann Konquist

    Come by and see Jo Ann demonstrate how to cut single mats, double mats, inlays, offset corners, and V-grooves. She will also show methods to hinge your artwork. Learn about the different mat cutters and mat boards available to suit your artwork.

    Jo Ann Kronquist studied at the Emily Carr Institute, where she began matting her own work. She has taught mat cutting, worked as a picture framer, and published a book titled Matting and Framing Essentials.
